Hi Everyone.
I am brand new to this hobby.
We purchased a 65 gallon tank.
So far what we have done is filled the tank with RODI water and mixed the instant ocean salt. We let it set overnight and kept testing it and adding salt until the salinity level is at 1.021. This morning at 9am it was 1.021
We went ahead and added live rock and live sand. This was about 10am. It turned milky white for a few hours but now its crystal clear. Sometime between 10am and 9pm when I got home from work, the water was all clear.
I tested the salinity when I got home from work at 9pm, it was up to 1.026.
As of now there is nothing in the tank except water, salt, live sand, and live rock.
Here are my questions:
Should I be using a heater during this cycling progress? If so what temp should we set it at?
How long should I wait until testing for things like ammonia, nitrate? Do we start testing right away or wait a week or so then test? We completely understand that this is not something we want to rush into or hurry in adding livestock and completely prepared to wait as long as it takes, but we are just not sure when to actually start the testing for ammonia and nitrates.
What should we be doing now? Nothing? Waiting? Testing? What is the next step we should be taking?
