Hey everyone! This thread will be kept for updates on my tank so everyone can grill me for the stuff I am trying to do.
Specs
20g long
1.5 inch sandbed mix
30 lbs LR
20-40g canister filter
24 inch 4t5 +led moon timer
10gallon wet/dry with power scrubbers as media and LR beneath the sponge
Skimmer (will update when I can remember the brand)
150w adjustable heater
1300gph circulation pump, I can't see any dead spots right now, I think it's in a good spot
Okay so I've got my tank running right now, I've had it with just water and LR (io sand for the water). After two weeks I had a massive die off on my LR, dead clams and other critters that came on the rock. After a large water change and lots of sifting out guts from the water and the sandbed, it's starting to clear up. It looked like a swamp for a while and absolutely stank like rotten eggs and made the girlfriend opt to stay with her mom for a few days (it was that bad). Before the water change my ammonia levels were off the charts. Now I've got it down to .5ppm with the last test of water. My nitrites are still too high but I expect those to continue to drop as well. I'm planning on doing a small dosing of calcium and magnesium to bring a little life back into the LR.
Ive been noticing some silky threads sticking to my circulation pump and my return. The one from the return is coming off the top of the LR. I haven't seen any algae blooms (hair algae is what I'm looking for). I'm waiting on algae to come out before I get a few cleaner critters in there.
I feel like I've read a few books since finding this forum. Thanks geoff spanky futuredoc etc everyone who has contributed.
Okay before you completely destroy me, I'm still learning. This is my fourth tank that I've set up and I'm hoping it goes well.
