Hi Everyone,
I just joined the site after setting my tank up 4 weeks ago. Since filling it, I've been taking tiny steps forward and learning a ton. A reef tank has always been a dream of mine. This is my first salt tank. I understand that getting it right and stable takes planning, investment, and stellar execution. That doesn't mean I'm patient though. It's a daily battle.
So far, I'm running it at 1.024 sg salinity. After an initial ammonia spike to 8 PPM, everything went to 0 and has stayed there. Ca is at 440 and hardness is at 13. pH is at 8.4. I've got a 3" DSB and 100# of live rock in it. I've been adding Microbacter7 for about a week. Hair algae is in bloom. Cyano is minimal. Red, purple, and white coraline are beginning to sprout everywhere and take over the rock from the hair algae.
As for livestock, I've added about 18 hermits and a dozen snails. I have an emerald crab and had a sally that died a week ago. There are some tiny snails that live in the sand mostly too, maybe 3mm across, purple and white stripes. I also found a baby sea star on the glass yesterday, 5mm across and 5 legs. We'll have to see if it becomes predatory as it grows. Can't really tell the type at this size. I may add an urchin and some more snails next week. The current crew seems to be slowing down the algae. A couple more should push past the tipping point. No fish or other inverts until the ATO, RODI, sump, and water change tank are running.
Right now lighting is at 2.88 watts/gal. I'm running a fluval 405 canister, a penn plax 1500 canister and a coralife pro 125 skimmer. Skimate is green/black and minimal.
I look forward to sharing with and learning from everyone on this forum. Please comment, I welcome the advice and education. There is a lot to learn and I know I'm still a rookie. Thanks in advance.
