I've been seeing an upsurge in the use of this nutri seawater as an alternative to mixing your own water. I'd like to share my thoughts on why it will eventually ruin your tank and you.
1. Look on the DFS website. Notice how live is in quotes? That's because it really isn't live! Most of the bacteria is likely dead as they have been sitting in a sealed container in a warehouse for likely weeks if not months. Maybe good to start a cycle, but not what you want to be adding to an established reef!
2. I'm not sure why it is sold with a specific gravity of 1.027. Probably so you don't have to buy so much and can just add extra fresh water to dilute it, thereby not having to use so much (but probably not since then they're losing money!). While most people would realize this, many newbies would likely not catch that, and therefore have too salty of a reef.
3. IT'S SO FRICKIN EXPENSIVE!!! You're paying over $5 a gallon for it! That's insane! I do buy premixed water from my LFS, but only pay 30$ for 25 gallons, so a bit over a dollar per gallon. You would be much better off buying premixed from your LFS or mixing salt into distilled water.
4. You're screwing yourself over. Ever need to do an emergency water change to save your entire tank? No problem, just wait 2-4 business days for your water to be delivered:doh:
5. You're really going to screw yourself over eventually. You'll want to get a bigger tank or keep more sensitive animals, but no luck, since your tank is now full of this expensive junk water.
I'm sure someone out there will swear to its effectiveness, but take a moment to think about this. If this product was really worth 25$/4.4 gallons, wouldn't all of us successful reefers be using it?
Merry Christmas, and hope Santa brings an new RO/DI unit!
