Finally my first nano reef! Help!

This weekend I will finally be taking over a pal of mines nano reef (14 gallon biocube)! He's moving the clowns he kept in it to a bigger tank so I'll be left with dual t5ho light, live sand, about 15 lbs of live rock, a tunze nano skimmer, and some palys and maybe a few zoas (will give details on those when I can see them and take some pics). I am left with a few question though....

Much of my research has led me to believe that a skimmer in this small of a tank will only be useless... Is that true?

I know this tank is small and stocking options will be limited, so what should I put in it to really get the most out of it? Clown pair? Not sure if I really like the one lonely damsel look

I do plan on letting this tank sit a gooooood while once in my hands before adding anything and will be checking parameters daily.
