DIY vs off-the-shelf tank

Many of the new nano tanks come complete with an overflow box in the rear which can house filters, carbon and skimmers. But they all seem to badly crowd the rear area to the point where many "nano" skimmers won't fit.

I am considering building my own 30-40 gallon tank (total volume) wherein the rear sump takes about a third of the tanks depth, leaving one third (20 to 30 gallons) for the display.

why would this not be an improvement over the ones you can buy on-line or from the LFS?
