I just purchased a 36 gal reef tank that has been running for a couple of years. It has live rock, live sand, corals, polyps, etc... There are 5 fish in it. I moved it and added approx 8-9 gals of new saltwater. The remaining water was transported from the tank. I have a hang on filter and protein skimmer. Everything tests good except I have high nitrates (80 ppm). The fish and corals look good, but I want to get the nitrates down. Everything I read online says to do a water change. It has only been going for 4 days since the move.
So my question is, is it safe to do a water change already? Is that risky this early on? I haven't really fed the fish yet, because I know that my make nitrates higher. So I want to get the nitrates where they should be. I feel bad not feeding the fish and I know it will be better for everything.
Any suggestions would be great!! I haven't had a reef tank in 10 years, so I'm kinda rusty.
Thanks
