Hello all! I've been keeping FW tanks for awhile and have wanted to set up a reef tank for years. Finally decided to do it so I've been reading these forums almost nonstop learning as much as I can (and no raising many more questions) but I'm very impressed with the level of knowledge here.
Today I purchased (Craigslist) an Oceanic 30 gallon cube with sump and the guts of a 1.5 yr old 80 gallon tank that was taken down today and I have a LOT of questions. Here is what I got:
30 gallon tank
Aqua illumination sol led lighting
2 hydor 1400 circ pumps
1 smaller circ pump
Mag pump
Titanium heater with remote probe
80lbs? Of live rock
Sand
Bucket of reef salt
Pair of black and white clownfish
Long spined urchin
A couple small corals
Current situation:
Live rock is in tubs with original water
Livestock in tub with original water
Sand in another tub
Sump not connected
Lights not mounted
Short term plans:
Figure out overflow and sump plumbing. Overflow has 3 outlets, not sure what the other two are for? What kind of filtering do I need to set up in sump? Sock? Sponge?
Setup tank with minimal cycle effects (should be possible since everything is from a mature tank) and get livestock situated in new home. Planning on an SSB with new sand. Do I need live sand? I'm planning to lift the live rock off the bottom for better flow.
Long term plans:
Add anemone for clownfish
Grow some LPS and soft corals
Add mandarin goby
Hope that all makes sense. What I need most is help and advice on the initial setup. Sump plumbing and filter setup, best ways to raise live rock off substrate, live or not sand, any steps to take before putting in water and liverock, position of circ pumps and if the hydor 1400s are to much, height of lighting above tank, and any other tips and advice anyone wants to share.
I know this is a lot but feel free to answer all, some, or one of the questions! I kneed all the advice I can get.
