As a newbie again (it's been 10 years since my last SW tank), I thought I'd give an update on how the new (used) tank setup was coming along.
Well I finally finished building my tank stand and have now brought it inside the house from the garage. The step of building the stand, cleaning all of the equipment and tanks (I bought this entire setup used, and it was a mess!), has taken quite a while. We set everything up yesterday and moved the live rock that has been in a tank in the garage into the tank and landscaped it. I think it turned out pretty good. There was a lot of really cool live rock!
To recap, this is what I got for $100
- 80g drilled tank
- 55g sump/refugium
- Coralife 48" quad compact fluorescent lights (2 10k / 2 actinic)
- misc. equipment (pumps, heaters, skimmer, etc)
- 100lbs - 120lbs of live rock
- 50lbs or so of live sand
This is what I have bought to set it up
- 2 of the Chinese 165W LED dimmable Aquarium lights
- 2 of the Jebao PP Series Wavemaker with Controller (PP-8)
- 1 Jebao Jecod Marine Controllable Water Pump
- 1 300w heater
It's been running for about 18 hours so far and everything is working great! No leaks, no issues (knock on wood!). Water is still a little hazy, but is clearing up nicely. Still quite aways away from adding any livestock (hopefully by Christmas), but can't wait until that day comes. I know patience is key, so I will make sure we're 100% ready. Although, there are 3 small cucumbers that were living in the live rock tank in the garage while I was building the stand, and they all survived. I knew they were in there but couldn't find them to take back to the LFS, but when I set up the live rock in the aquarium, I saw them in a few of the nooks and crannies. Hopefully they will continue to be OK as the tank cycles, although it should be a minor cycle since the live rock has been brewing in the garage for the past month or so.
