Ro/DI?

Hello everyone! I am brand new to this hobby and was wondering what a Ro/Di is? sorry if this is a stupid question but i dont have one and my tank is doing fine. the reason i ask is because ive heard the term thrown around many threads and am wondering if i need one? Im just wondering what they do.
