more efficient overflow

I have a 90 drilled tank with the corner overflow, it has the slots at the top as a n over flow does, everyday i watch stuff float around my tank until i go in and manually remove it.. unless it gets caught in the very top of the water it wont fo into the overflow and get filtered out

I was thinking, would it work/ is it a good or bad idea to modify the overflow so water gets taken from a few more spots rather than the top 1.5 inch or so from my tank

Has anyone drilled holes in their overflow, lets say half way down or is there any mods to help my tank filter better, iv always dealt with algae,even when keeping up on mantenance, im thinking better filtration can help
