Tank cycle

Hello,

Newbie cycle question here. I am converting my 50 gal freshwater to my first saltwater tank. 50 gallon, small hob sump, and a Fluval canistar filter. Hob just went on yesterday after I discovered the surface was nasty and I needed something to skim the surface. Instead of going full sand for the substrate, I used a mixture of the fractured clay from the preexisting setup and sand. I know there are drawbacks to not just using fine sand, but I like the contrast of the red, black, and white against the coral rocks. I knew I was going to have one check of a nasty die-off from the existing substrate and figured the bio-load would help jump start the cycle.

So, 2 weeks into the cycle I have no ammonia, and the nitrate and nitrite are through the roof. I figure I have at least 2 50% water changes in my future.

So to get to the point of my post, I have not detected ammonia in any of my test samples since the start. Not a big surprise since I have nothing stocked yet. I have not added live rock to seed the rest yet because the nitrates would pretty much kill anything that it would be seeding to the other rocks. My concern is that since I do not have anything adding ammonia, my cycle will be incomplete.

I have never had ammonia issues in any of my other tanks, so I'm not quite sure if this is something to worry about or not. Thanks for any advice you can send my way.

Jason
