Hello all, and thanks for hosting this forum! I'm just getting started with setting up my first reef tank. I have kept a planted tank for the past 15 years and have been a tropical fish hobbyist for almost 30 years. I've long had an interest in a reef tank but never fully could invest in making the switch but the time seems right. I will be breaking down my largest freshwater setup for my first reef tank.
My initial question is about the lighting strength--I have a 65-gallon tank (36x18 with height of 24). Lighting system is 2x39 T5HO high lumen.....seems from what I'm reading and from my mentor this is a low to low/moderate setup for marine, enough to support soft corals, no anemones. Thoughts?
Substrate-wise I'm going to take a slow break-in period, live sand with dry rock to avoid hitchhikers/pests....anyone have experience with this approach? Any words of wisdom/thoughts on this?
Thanks for all input, looking forward to exploring the forum!
