I have a question for everyone:
Does adding vodka to the live rock cooking bins speed up the process?
Here's the deal, I'm cooking and drying the rocks to store for a couple of years until I get my new tank. I've been using pure RO/DI and healthy doses of vodka for two weeks now. The water is kept warm and every morning it smells like the worst rotten egg smell ever. The water turns very dark greenish/blackish, and the rocks get some blackish tint to them.
Every day I do 100% water change. Last night I did not add vodka and the rocks did not smell today. This leads me to believe that the vodka does cause the bacteria to consume organic matter more quickly leading to the discoloration of the water and the terrible smell.
I use fresh water because I'm not concerned about preserving any life whatsoever in the rocks, just want to purge them completely.
My question is...am I right to think the vodka is speeding up the process? Is there any improvement I could make to my system of 100% water change every day or two? I have two powerheads in the bin and keep it in absolute darkness 24/7.
