Overflow/Durso Pipe question

I'm in the process of converting my old reef tank(replaced with a 93 cube) into a turtle tank since we rescued a 3rd turtle (some gave it up because they moved) and need more room from our 75.

My question is I removed the old internal overflow box and wondered if I need it for my turtle tank? I don't really need to skim the surface of the water with a turtle tank I need it to gather all the water to hopefully get the turtle waste into the sump.

Will the durso still work in this setup? It will be blocked off from the turtles just no water skimming.

Here's a picture of my idea.

The durso will be a bit taller and actually look like a durso pipe just haven't figured out how tall I want it yet.

The output will be split to have a waterfall and more flow underneath.

All the piping will be covered with egg crate and then rocks on top of it to allow nothing to settle underneath. (well that's the plan)
