Hi. I have run freshwater aquariums for some time but have always been interested in saltwater, but I'm still pretty much clueless in regards to saltwater tanks. Today I found a cracked 55 gallon tank on the sidewalk for bulky trash pickup and inside were several rocks. All of them are covered in small hollow cone-like projections. 4 of the rocks are completely white and were dry. The other 3 have patches of red areas and also have several clumps of green plant growth. They were still wet. My question is, what are these? Can you tell if they are live rocks or just rocks. What do the red patches indicate? What are the plants growing on them?
