Hello and new nem problems

Hello there! I apologize if this isn't the proper way to do this, first post, first SW tank, and with it comes a bit of cluelessness I'm afraid.

I've recently bought some live inhabitants from a long time aquarist getting out of the hobby, among them were quite a few colorful polyps, an urchin, and a rather beautiful peacock colored nem! We got it home, got everything set up, and (dont kill me too hard for this, I -know- this was a mistake, but was the only option I had) got the tank started on its cycling. I will not slander his name, but I believe I got some rough advice.

See, I was told that as long as I rinsed the sand, and set the nem up asap with a few chromis the tank would cycle easily and quickly, and everything would be okay. For the first few days, all indicators that I can think of, except for one, to my eyes looked positive. The polyps are growing, some spreading. The mushrooms are growing, and the crabs are crabbing it up. The Urchin, I'm afraid didn't make it. It wasn't happy at all, shedding its spines and within 48 Hours it was gone. I attribute that to a 4 hour car ride along the coast being bashed around like a typhoon and a massive water quality change into a new tank.

A day later, this beautiful nem decides to yell "DERP!" and faceplant the sand. Well, it seemed to be happy there, the crabs arent torturing it. Okay, We have a sand nem then! Its since been another 5 days, and slowly, from the center of its stem, it seems to be turning itself inside out. Or at least relaxing itself more than I'd expect. I'm unsure what a dying nem looks like, and a few posts shown in this forum show what look to be an incredibly accelerated view of this process. I know theres a 5 post limit before pictures can be put up, as soon as I get those out of the way I'll get a picture and show this little guys plight.

My main questions are thus: Is he dying? If he is could there be a way for me to prevent it? And Should I just remove it and wait the (after some extra research after the purchase) suggested year to set up nems in the tank?

Any and all help would be appreciated, I believe I was pushed to rush this process much quicker than I was comfortable with, and the nem may have paid the price for my ignorance.
