I, just like all the other reef keepers here have became addicted to this hobby. And this being my first tank has A LOT of issues. First of all, when I set up the tank, I went to Petco (And yes it gets worse) Then I trusted the "Aquatic specialist" to set me up with a tank. And I put my trust in him. And $1200 I had a 40b with a heater, dirt cheap light, a fluval canister filter, and some crushed gravel. (COMPLET RIP-OFF). Oh yeah, I forgot he gave me FRESHWATER test strips and told me that they're the same as salt water  with a 45$ hydrometer. Now 7 months later, I added sand on top of the crushed coral because the crushed coral looked really bad. Then I bought a piece of LR from him that brought 4 different nuisance algae's into my setup.. And he told me I didn't need to rinse my substrate, so my crushed coral bed is loaded with dust. And I went back a while ago to get a CRP overflow box that I know have. And that doesn't work. And My fluval filter broke and my tank has no filtration. And my Coral's aren't opening.:bawling: And now all I'm constantly regretting my choices. And I would like to restart my tank, but my fish. I have a Yasha goby pistol shrimp I could never separate with. Also, I have a cleaner wrasse that eats pellets and only needs to be fed twice a day, and I am attached to all my inhabitants. And the work I would like to do (and need to do) on my tank would involve draining my tank, power-washing my LR. Changing my substrate, drilling the tank, etc. But I would never give up my inhabitants. So could I drain my tank water into a large tub (30-40g), set the tub with a HOB filter for 3-6 days, while I work on my tank. Then fill my tank with all new water Live sand, and dry rock and add instant ocean biosphere to kick start the cycle. And put the fish and 1 coral back in the tank after 2-4 days off running? The fish and coral would live in a tub for a few days?.
So, to sum it up: I would take my LR, Water, and inhabitants out of my tank putting it in a 40g tub. Restarting my reef tank. Adding biosphere and then adding my stock back in the tank with 3-4 days of the new, old tank running?
Could This be successfully done?
