Whiskey's 75G Dead Silent mixed reef

I'm starting a new thread for my tank since it's going a new direction now.

Even though it was really quiet with the Bean Animal overflow, soundproofed stand, and quiet equipment it was still causing noise issues in the house. It came down to a couple of choices. Make it always silent, or put it in my home office where I would not get to see it nearly as much. I decided that I would much rather see it all the time than have it locked away.

I did some research and discovered that there are a few people out there who have managed to keep softie tanks long term with no skimmer, GFO, carbon, or even water changes in a couple cases.

I'm not going to go that far, but I have removed my sump, CA reactor, Kalk reactor, skimmer. I got rid of all my SPS coral, and I've been picking up softies. The idea being that softies will take up nutrients from the water. I also lowered the light level.

Right now the system consists of the following:
75G tank
4x54W T5 HO with a single white flat reflector.
Eheim Canister filter (for carbon and GFO as needed)
Inline heater to keep it out of the tank
Apex for topoff as well as monitoring salinity and PH and general control.
Single Tunze 6105 for flow

I'm honestly not sure if this will work for me, I've never run a saltwater tank without a skimmer before, but I'll document the ups and downs here!

Feel free to join in the fun,
Whiskey

PhaneSoul's 40b DIY all-in-one system

Hey all! Its been awhile since ive really been active. Ive been lurking mostly for the past year or so, commenting here and there but after the fall of my last system (due to no part of myself or the system) i kindve got discouraged starting from scrap besides a few pumps, equipment and small tanks that I could salvage.

In may i started a 20g AIO system with 2 caramel clowns, 2 purple firefish, a serpent seastar and a yellow coral banded shrimp as a 'nightstand' tank. Its still going, although something happened with my shrimp a few weeks ago, it shed and came out missing a good portion of its legs and claws and hardly mobile, a few weeks later and it regrew one claw and is still surviving, hopefully this new tank upgrade will help it get to better health. Although the health part may also be my contribution as i havent done a water change on this tank in probably 5 months now with just a skimmer removing waste (alot of it) and only pellets for food. I never planned on this system having coral so it has a very weak light only meant to provide little light when the bedroom light is out.

Anyways. I figured a 20g is just as big as a 40b stand right (reefer logic at its finest).

But to cut down on noise, equipment, maintenance, it would naturally be a all in one system since it is still in my bedroom and it will also be a medium to high nutrient system which should allow me to have euyphilla, zoas, maybe an sps here and there, acans and a toadstool (or other corals that will tolerate the system).

So ive designed a system around my wants. I know which coral should do well within it, the fish wont change much, ill probably get a pair of yellow watchman gobies and 2 other fish that will take to the water column to provide more activity, not sure wich ones yet. The system will have a half inch special grade aragonate sandbed, a reef octopus bh 50 skimmer (which i already have), a reactor employing a mixed bed of gfo and carbon, a dc 12000 return pump (dialed down to about 300gph but i need the full power of the return pump for maintenance), led/ t5 light combo, about 15 pounds of pukani live rock and i may or may not have chaeto in the sump area.

Ive already designed and water tested the system i designed and i need to redesign it. The baffles will only sustain around 600gph of flow. I would like the baffles blacked out and i need to redesign the plumbing (cuz i made a couple mistakes). The 1$ per gallon sale ended before i could get a new 40b so ill have to wait until the next one, but ill push forward in transferring everything over and redesigning the return plumbing.

Thats about it for the post. Ill post a few pics here once i get them uploaded to the site. Untill then, all enjoy your new years!

65 g RSM System w/Everything in it: $2000.00

I live in N. GA.

I have a Red Sea Max C250 (without the hood) 65-gallon tank, black, with stand. I tossed out the hood and have two AI Hydra 26 pucks on arms above tank.

I have about 35 pounds of live rock and the following livestock:

Percula Clown fish
Diamond Goby

Corals (all pretty much medium sized - not fragments)

Frogspawn
Purple Mushroom
Leather coral (LARGE)
Cinarina
Tongue Coral
Green Hammer Coral
Blue Mushroom (very small)
Green Mushroom
Small green Zooanthid
Two mollusks that have lived for three years!

I'm moving to a smaller house in the summer, and there is no place to put the tank, plus the cost is too much for me.

Tangs - 6 foot rule/thoughts

Just wanted to make a post into tang tank sizes .. friendly debate/no tang popo .. also would be nice if people wouldnt reference liveaquaria or the likes i know it gives you an idea but im sure lots have been there done that including i .. after all when people search on google these are the type of threads they run into.

several tangs are on my radar for the new aquarium -
im either be going to get a 5x2x2.5 or a
4x2x2 .. though im leaning towards the 5 foot as itt'l work out cheaper then a custom tank.

so the "6 foot" rule ..
ill start by laying out a few examples,
yellow tang - 4 foot - 100gal
kole/tomini tang - 4 foot - 90gal
regal/orange shoulder tang etc - 6 foot - 180 gallon
powderblue tang/whitecheek/purple tang - 5 foot - 150gal

now the larger tangs that reach 12"
my feelings towards this is they would be fine in a 5 foot 180 as it meets the gallon requirements for one.
two if you aquascape it for multiple swimming lanes you theoretically create 10 feet of swimming lanes.
three my .02 is that most tank raised specimens will not reach there full 12" potential in captivity more likely 9-10"
obviously not overloading the systems with multiple tangs creating aggression between species helps also ..
plus on the fact that they take many years to reach the larger sizes .. although this works in our favour if the aquarium is a foot shorter then recommended ..
but i feel like these "guidelines" were created on the fact that most 6 foots are 180 etc .. its like saying if i put a orange shoulder tang in a 6 foot 75 gallon hey its AOK because its "6 foot" .. i feel being a hobbyist where the fish has already been through so much in a short time from the ocean to us its just inappropriate & careless to do wrong by them .. but im on the fence also with the 6 foot rule .. take for example the 4x2x2 would have ample swimming room in my opinion along with a 5x2x2.5 bare in mind its not a standard 5x2x2 and is a total of 681litres just the same as a "6 foot" 180 ..
what are the thoughts of fellow TRT members ?

Noob

Hi,
Thanks for an amazing forum.
I have had great success with tropical freshwater. I'm now ready to play with 'real' aquariums.
As I assume with all noobs I'm here to learn and get advice. Hopefully after some time, I can then contribute with the knowledge I have gained.
I was going to start with a 43gal (160L) tank. I have the tank, however after doing a lot of research I'm thinking of going to a Red Sea Reefer that is 108gal (409L) as the set up costs are not that much more excluding the tank.
I have 2 placement options The back of the living room, which won't get much viewing and it's in a thoroughfare and there is a monster home theatre that can easily shake the room, so from what I have been reading is not a good idea on any account. The other option which is a bit selfish is the bedroom. It will get much more viewing there, however sump noise maybe an issue. I have hit upon a plan to put the sump in a storage room that was one a bathroom, so it can handle the spills etc. The sump would be about 10' (3m) away with the plumbing running under the house.

I live in Melbourne Australia and I would insulate the pipes as the temperature can vary outside from 45°f to 105°f. Under the house it's a bit more stable and would be 50°f to about 75°f. I will have a chiller as well as a heater.

Do you think that is a solution that would work and what potential challenges that may present?

I ofcourse have plenty more questions, however I will solve one problem at a time.

Thank you for your time and a Happy New Year to all, may your corals thrive and grow and you fish be healthy.

New Years Eve Sunday

Morning everyone. A cold last day of 2018 here in Ohio, with temps barely above zero and going to be colder tonight.

Going to try a Japanese aging technique on some wood today to build up a wall in the kitchen. Not sure what the right combination of stains, burning and wire brushing will be.

Enjoy your Sunday everyone.

Where is the Sales section?

I want to sell my Red Sea Max C250 (65 gallon) with AI LED lights and everything in it, but I can't find where I can put it for sale.

I've struggled for three years to get everything right and can't. I'm over it. I want it gone. How do I best do that without giving it away?

2017's last Saturday

75 gallon with dual overflow. Stupid question.

Ok. I've decided to go with a 75 gallon tank with dual overflow.Mainly for redundancy in case of a clog. I'm not familiar with reef pluming at all. Can I do this with one sump? Also do I need two pumps? And is the overflow serving the same purpose as a skimmer? Thanks K

Black on frog spawn coral?

Hey all,
my frogspawn coral frag got moved to larger tank. I think he was picked up roughly with forceps during the move (grr) and a couple days later looks like this. Is this damage from the move, sting from the duncan, or something else going on? Hes not a happy guy. What should I do? Thanks!

Friday before New Years

Good mawnin' TRT!

Baby, it's cold outside!! Coffee is ready. I believe Hack promised Dunkin Donuts, and I'll offer up some oatmeat dressed up with chopped dates and pecans, a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon. Hot chocolate to warm up those tummies.

When I say its cold here....that doesn't compare to what those of you in the northern US are dealing with these days.

Prayers for everyone affected by the apartment fire in the Bronx last night.

Lots of love and hugs and peace to everyone!

Frags?

Just looking for some stuff to jump start my new tank 29g. Does anyone have stuff they are willing to part with in the area.

New to saltwater

Hi! I have had a lot of experience in freshwater but I have always loved saltwater.

I was thinking about eventually converting one of my 20g tanks into a saltwater environment (nothing fancy, just a couple small fish and live rock). Nothing bigger- my other tanks are happily occupied and I don’t have space for more.

I’m just looking to start a conversation about possibilities, and am looking for advice on stocking and how to transition.

And of course I’m also looking for some new friends who know more about this than me!

Thanks :)

ISO waspfish

I’m looking for a red rooster waspfish if anyone can help me find one thank you.

ID please

Just wondering if anyone could ID these white stringy cocoon looking things. I had to have surgery the other week and had someone feeding my tank for me. I get home now they have doubled in size. I knew they were there and though it was just a sponge as they didn't have these long tenticale things before i left for surgery. Thanks in advance .

Almost New Years Thursday

Merry Thursday TRT!

Yep, me again...guess most everyone else is still on Holiday.

Well, had a bad afternoon yesterday...it seems something got in the tank water and all of my Chromis seemed to be going, and my Clowns too. I noted my skimmer was going crazy and overflowing so I turned off the skimmer.

The Tang, Butterfly, Gramma and Blenny seemed fine. But when one Chromis was down sideways and one of the Clowns was laying on the bottom I had to take action. So I had about 15 gallons of fresh brewed RO/DI water and started adding and removing water until the Clown was back up and swimming normally. I didn't have time to add salt but I did nuke some of it to warm it some.

This morning I have 4 Chromis, the Tang, Butterfly, the two Clowns, the Royal Gramma, and Blenny swimming. My last Cleaner Shrimp is gone though. Even with 15 gallons of fresh RO the salinity is still okay at about 1.022.

I have no clue what happened but I'll be doing water changes over the next few days. Wow, when I saw the male clown on the bottom and the female hovering over him I nearly cried. Given the circumstances, I came through that event pretty well.

Okay, so moving on good morning everyone. Here's to hoping your day is less eventful than mine.

To acclimate a Longnose butterfly or not to???

Hey there...so I have a well established quarantine tank...sandbed, LR etc I run constantly...and a 90 gallon as well that is mature...I am looking into a longnose butterfly. Question...should I quarantine him or not? I am buying him from a very trusted guy I know who sells fish in great shape! And IF he goes straight into the 90 gallon he will be around UBER peaceful fish and LOTS of LR to hide etc...and as well a good pod population and a owner who knows how to feed a variety and work slowly with the fish etc...what you alls thoughts?

My friend Madison if your reading this your thoughts????...you know the fish I have...I'm a bit worried about him and the Tomini...kinda sorta...but I feel there two different types of fish...

Wednesday Morning after Christmas

Wow, I get to start the morning thread?!?

Well, I have some time this morning having nearly finished the lecture content of the new class and will begin working on the hands-on labs next. I've been having an issue with MS Office so its reinstalling as I type.

Sorry, I've been out of touch lately as was at a peak time of the new class project. Was getting up early and working late.

Anyway, wanted to come by and see if everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We went to one of Carrie's brothers Christmas eve and had a nice visit. Christmas day we opened a few gifts between us and prepared to go to one of her daughter's homes. Only one other daughter and boyfriend came and we watch the foster child open her gifts and then exchanged some between us. Came home about 8 and went to bed shortly afterwards. All in all it was nice and comfortable.

Hope everybody else at TRT had a Merry Christmas too.

Uv lights in reef tank

Hello guys and happy holidays. I’ve been reviewing the way i set up my lights in my biocube 32 ( ai prime hd) i realized that i was having my reds, green and uv on throughout the 10 hours i have my lights on, i was thinking on just leaving blues at ramping time and have uv, violet, cool whites, red and green for 6 hours a day. I really still working to figure out how does lighting works i’ve never had to program intensity in my previous tanks. Can you guys share how you set up ypur lights? Any help will be appreciated.

peppermint shrimp

Hi everyone I was just wandering can you have 1 peppermint and 1 cleaner shrimp together in the same tank. My cleaner shrimp died Christmas eve and the other is fully grown. I have never mixed shrimps before in a tank.

Why don't they make equipment coralline colored?

It would make sense if they made equipment, power heads etc. the color of coralline algae.
I mean why not. They make fake rocks that color. Then you couldn't tell when they were covered and you wouldn't feel as guilty about not cleaning them all off.

TRTI Tuesday

Morning all. Touch of TRTI due to eating I think way too much cheese and good stuff late Christmas night. Denise's grandkid's had a plethora of grandparents, along with aunts and uncles. My grandtwins in San Diego loved their gifts as well.

Hoping to hear something soon about another assignment at work. The uncertainty is the worst. I don't want to spend too much on projects, then have regrets.

We will be down to single digits at night most of this week. Might have to buy more wood at this rate.

Coffee is on, along with tons more cheese and crackers to snack on.

Help toadstool coral

Hi I’m wondering if anyone can help I’ve been running my tank for a year now and my toadstool has got a patch of flesh missing and it’s a yellow colour in it
It also build up with a powdery substance like if it’s falling apart and it’s on the edge of the cap

All my parameters are good had them checked at a couple of different lfs everything else is fine including my lt nem
The polyups don’t seem to be extending at all now if they do it’s about 5mm
Thanks if anyone has any ideas

Tank Alkalinity Issues

Hello All,
It has been years since I have posted so bear with me. Before we get to the problem, let’s tell you about my tank. I have 80 gallon total water volume and have about 8 corals most of frag size and one 3-4inch derasa clam. My tank has been running over 1.5 years now and for the last 6 months I have more then struggled with dkh (using a Hanna tester). The problem appears that the more alk I add the more the tank consumes. I use a Kalk reactor on a perstaltic pump as well as 2 part b-ionic. I had gotten as high as all my top off with the kalk and 110ml of each part of 2 part but that is ridiculous. I tried large volume water changes and did essentially 3 of those with no affect on the alk consumption. The alk would spike to the level of the water mixed and drop over days back down. My mag is 1310 and calcium runs 415ish. Nitrates and phosphate at 0. I had some precipitation prior but currently have none and do not understand why this tank consumes an incredible amour of alk. I scrapped all the coralline I could reach and currently do not have a large amount. Currently I have backed off to 1000 ml of Kalk and 10 of each of 2 part. I’m extremely frustrated. Attached is a graph of my dkh.

Any thoughts?

Sincerely,
Drop

Rodi questions

Well my tank just about crashed after I bought water from the lfs and I failed to check the alk before a water change. I decided to build my own small water change station and had a few question and would appreciate any advice..

1. Can I use stainless steel tubing for my rodi line instead of plastic

2. When rodi is not in use do I have to store it wet and under presure or drain after.

3. Can rodi water sit in a container in the summer time if garage temps reach 110 degrees

4. Trustworthy shut off floats that can handle 60 psi?

For now I will probally just manually fill my rodi bin and think about automating it later . Didn't have room for the rodi bin to be elevated so I will have to pump it out to a small container to mix salt.

I will post some pictures but I haven't gotten to far started yesterday and beers started tasting too good :).. I am going to enjoy having a sink in the garage and wife will be happy no more motor grease in her kitchen sink!!

Oh and I forgot.. how do you store your salt? Can I store it in the garage? Do I have to have it in a sealed bucket? I am using reef crystals and it comes in a

Hitchiker is- cross between an anemone and a feather duster. Crazy

I've seen this long fuzzy looking stuff growing in one spot of my live rock for awhile. I thought it was a sponge. Today when I fed one of the tendrils grabbed a hunk of food and dragged it into a hole. I looked around the side of the tank and found this cross between a feather duster and an anemone hapily stuffing its mouth!

What kindve paint for inside the tank?

Im installing my last baffle today for my 40b all in one system im making. Ive decided i want to paint the main tank divider, the one that divides where the live rock and fish will be from the skimmer & equipment. I want to at least partially sheild the equipment sections from any light to help prevent unwanted growth and if anything prvent seeing into the equipment chambers while your looking at the fish. But what type of paint to use? It must resist at most a green scratchpad (thats all i use to clean any sump) and it will of course be under water.

Just a quick post here before I go to yoga.

skunk cleaner shrimp - isopod life cycle ?

Hey i picked up a skink cleaner shrimp which has an isopod feeding on it under its skin/white bubble on side.

now i know once it has its first molt in my tank it should rid it or the parasite hence prompting the female to release its eggs .. im just wondering since they need pods for the first feeding/progression stage of there lifecycle otherwise they will die off .. once the shrimp molts & the eggs are released what would be a good time to get my copepod population started .. 5 weeks ?
6 weeks ?
basically just want to know how long these isopods will last without a copepod host for the first stages of there life .. when will it be safe to add pods.
cheers.

Mangrove question

Still in the planning stages of my new stand for my 40 Breeder, that will have at least 2 20L sumps in it.

Had the idea of mangroves. I have 10 right now, and they are cool, but not nearly enough to do any real filtering. Nonetheless, they are growing VERY well.

So this give me an idea. What if I ditched the skimmer (might still keep it, but not sure, not the main reason for doing this), and filled both 20L sumps with mangroves. About 100 per sump. For a 40B, would that be enough to say the heck with the skimmer? Also, what are your thoughts on this idea in general?

The stand will be fairly tall, so that would allow for a lot of growth. Although a benefit, nutrient export would not be the main goal. Quite frankly, it would be really cool not only to open of the cabinet and see 200 mangroves, but to also be able to say that all these mangroves are the only filter and "equipment" other then some bare necessities.

LED Lighting info needed

I'm an experienced freshwater aquarist. But I'm finally trying to set up a reef tank. Im used to using T5HO lights when I had a dutch tank. Is there a LED lights for dummies tutorial somewhere?

Help me identify these weird clusters in my sand (w/ pictures)

Hi All-

I noticed these just today (3 different locations in the tank.) I have had SW tanks for probably 10 years and I have never seen these. I sent the pictures to friends who have tanks and no one knows what the heck they are either, so I come to you! I'm pretty sure someone in here can identify these clusters of......?

Moonlight

I have noticed that every night all of my soft corals close up within 10 minutes of the moonlight turning on, and sometimes my hammer coral will close a little too? All of the corals are healthy and growing. Does anyone have any Ideas why this might be occurring?

Tank specs:

20" sump
coral life 80g protein skimmer
Filter socks (changed daily)
Weekly 5g water changes

Dip coral?

Hi all,
First try with corals, got a couple frags, They are in a fishless qt tank, been about 45 days, going to move them soon. Didnt know about coral dips though. Do I need to dip them at this point? What is best to use? Is my qt now compromised? It just houses some inverts, live sand/rock, and chaeto. Thanks!

Tank Parameters

Bacj after a 15 year huatus as seahorses are finally sustainable

Hello everyone,

Had tanks the majority of my life with the exception of the last 15 years as I always wanted to do seahorse exclusive tank but heard they outcome was always devastating.

With technology where it is today and the fact I just bought a reef fready, sixty semi-gallon reef tank, I would love everyone's opinion or advice. I have a 20 tall sump but want to run one with a similar build but more for refugium alongside it. is this at all possible? is there any way to get by with the predrilled holes as I just bought a tank this already, from the sound of it, obsolete.

Thursday greetings!

Good mawnin', TRT!

Coffee is on. Let's have buttermilk waffles with VT maple syrup or fruit on top. Someone else can make the sausage or bacon.

Civitan in a minute. Our speaker today is with the Veteran's Affairs office. Should be an interesting presentation.

Lots of love and hug and peace to everyone!

Anemone dying, plz help!

hey all, my friend broke down and sold his tank and gave me a big beautiful rose tip bubble anemone. Told me it'd be fine in my tank though its only about 4 months old. I've kept inverts before but never in such a new tank. It's about a 30 gallon running a fluvial 206 with all the in box media, a marineland 350, and mainland LED's.

The anemone started off looking ok after the initial shock of acclimating to the tank, then deteriorated quickly (got very flat and less puffy, tentacles all sucked in, mouth wide open.)
I checked my levels and amm, nitrite are at 0, nitrate is suddenly spiking,ph around 8.0 before lights out and my salinity was almost 1.026. i remedied the salinity with a 20% WC last night and bumped the salinity down to 1.024, and he looked wonderful all night long.

Came home tonight and again he looks like he's in very bad shape. I'd hate to call him a loss but i know if he dies he could kamikaze my entire tank. any help would be wonderful.

New Reefer Canopy Lighting. Please Help! Kessil AP700 vs Ecotech Radion

Hello Everyone,

I’m in the process of gathering equipment for my first build (Aqueon 90g 4ft megaflow) but after getting caught in a research deathspin with zero actual reefing experience, I’m agonizing over a lighting solution. Due to return policies and available deals, I’d need to make a decision by December 31st. If I could get some opinions it could save me a lot of anxiety.

I’m looking to go LED but the canopy I’ve spent a bit of time refurbishing is a flip-top with only 6” total clearance from the top of the tank and 8” total from the top of the overflow (water level). Using a lower profile LED option mounted at .5-1” from the canopy top, I could get 5-6” clearance from the bottom of the fixture to the top of the water. The back of the canopy is completely open so there should be decent air flow. I will also be putting a few computer fans in the sides. As it’s a flip top, there is not much I can do in terms of sawing holes to place lighting.

My goal at the moment is a mixed reef, softies, LPS, some SPS, and clams if possible with perhaps the ability to do more SPS in the future if that calls to me. I’m currently looking at the Kessil AP700 and Ecotech Radion G4 Pro (either XR30 or XR15) and I’ve done most of my research on those options, though I’m open to other solutions as well. My tank has the center brace on the top, so I’d be looking at either 2 AP700s, 2 XR30s, or 4 XR15s…
Here’s where I’m at.

Ecotech Radions

Apex compatibility is a plus. With my mounting height I have concerns that the known discoball effect and shimmer will be exaggerated as well as hotspots. The lighting pucks on the XR30 are spaced pretty close together. With 4 XR15s I could spread them out a bit. However, with the center bracket on the tank I’m not completely sure how much benefit I’d get from this.

4 XR15s would be more future-proof in a sense that I could use them if I downsize tanks, wanted to upgrade and use these for a frag tank, go larger, etc. The biggest issue for me here is my mounting height. The XR30’s have the fan on the bottom and the instructions clearly state that minimum mounting height is 9” above the water surface. I assume the XR15s are the same, though they do have the fan on the top.

Kessil AP700

From the reviews I’ve seen Kessil’s shimmer, par spread, color are arguably at or near the top in the industry. The biggest plus is that based on product images/descriptions, these are actually rated for a mounting height of 5-7” which fits my application.

I’ve gotten varying dimensions on how far the actual pucks are spread but I believe they’re 12” from center to center on each fixture. That would put the middle of the first light 6” from the side of the tank, the second and third 6” from the middle of the center bracket, and the fourth 6” from the far side of the tank with a light almost exactly every 12” across the tank. Unfortunately they are not Apex compatible and I haven’t received a clear response on what happens to the programming in a power outage.

Sorry for the novel. I'm obviously leaning toward the Kessils at the moment I'll add a few followup questions if I get any takers on this.

Live Rock and Cupramine, not quite the disaster I was expecting!

Hey all, just wanted to share a personal experience.

I have a 220, 150# live rock, 2 inch sand bed, mixed reef tank. Fish, Inverts, Macros. (I have coral frags in Qt but not in yet). Anyway Its my first tank I started about 18 months ago and I started so big because I had a free tank and because everyone said to go as big as possible because you will want bigger.
(Mistake 1- Not a great idea for your first tank. lol Your mistakes are much bigger too!)

Several months ago I got ich (Mistake 2- shorted the QT on a fish) and, after days of trying I couldnt catch all the fish. I removed the inverts, got some advice from some LFS, and (being only a year into the hobby), didnt know you werent supposed to mix Cupramine and live rock. (Mistake 3)
The tank was kept at a medicinal level of cupramine for 4 weeks (because once the damage was done, might as well make sure not to short the treatment).

At the end of treatment I was told to get rid of the rock and the sand and the tank if I ever wanted anything other than fish, that the copper would be in the sand, rock, silicone, etc. That it would leech out unexpectedly and I would not be able to reintroduce inverts to the tank.

But I wanted to see what I could do with it before giving my inverts away.

I ran cuprisorb and carbon for a month and did a couple 20-30% water changes. At the end of the month my copper levels were reading 0 on both Sailfert and Seachem tests consistently. Removed cuprisorb and just let the tank be "normal" for a couple weeks, still 0, did another water change. Still 0. Started seeing amphipods in the overflows again. Reintroduced some of my inverts (a turbo snail and a few hermits). Everyone was fine. After a week of them continuing to be fine, I added back my big fighting conch, my nassarious snails, and my other turbos. All fine. Added back my peppermint shrimp, the rest of the crabs, and whatever other bristle worms and creepy crawlies that were in the sand in the seperate invert holding tank were dumped back in. 3 months later the copper level has never been identifiable on any test, i have not lost a single invert, the macros are fine, tons of amphipods hiding in the corners and all over my fuge, and my water parameters are fine so the live rock and sand are functioning well.

So total its been about 4 1/2 months since the end of the copper treatment, 1 month of "removal" time and 3 1/2-4 months of just normal tank care with my inverts crawling around doing invert things.

Im not saying everyone should go and dump cupramine in their tanks with Live Rock at the first sign of Ich! But, salvaging the tank if it is necessary (or if you are a newbie) is not impossible and may not require starting from scratch. Obviously, I will not be doing it again but just wanted to share my story!

This is interesting.

I added a wave break to stop this from happening. Basically another baffle that doesnt go all the way down. I still need to test this with my skimmer to see if i need a bubble trap. Just thought it was interesting how the flow and the stand being on a carpet made this happen.

Methylene Blue dip

I have a solution of 0.82g/100ml and would like someone to please tell me what is the right concentration for a dip. My female Tomato Clown has a recurring fungal infection. I have been treating the whole tank but it comes back to her immediately though the male isn't yet effected. Any other advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Twas the Tuesday before Christmas

Top of the morning to all our TRT Friends this wonderful morning, and....HAPPY TUESDAY! Yeah, feeling a smidge optimistic this may be our last day of the season at work, so a little internal happiness oozing out here. Heading near 60 degrees for a high today, yeah, that makes it feel like winter break is looming. Got some Thomas's English muffins with an assortment of jellies to go with our coffee this morning. When I get home tonight/afternoon I will be heading out to the dreaded 'week before Christmas stores' to let Nate, well actually the both of us, do some last minute shopping. BIG DANGER....Him and me shopping together! The Mrs., says one of us is a bad influence on the other....I just can't remember who she was referring to?:D Hope all are safe and well, and all the best,

Closet frag tank

Hey all... so both of my tanks have hit a great equilibrium, thus naturally I am planning to mess with one! I'm thinking of turning my 60 gal mixed reef into a frag tank and my husbands big idea is to keep it in the closet under our stairs... my biggest concern is air flow. What is anyone's thoughts on that? If we kept the door open and potentially had a fan promoting circulation could it work? We currently have every kid of coral growing in it that I can think of: softies, LPS, SPS... and all seem to be doing great so it's the natural choice for a frag tank. Thanks for any advice!!

Decorator crab- should he stay or should he go

After feeding my tank this afternoon I noticed a new hitchiker. A decorator crab about the size of a nickel. He's quite fascinating to watch. Thankfully none of mycoral was stuck to him. Well I snatched him out but I'm feeling kind of bad. I don't have a sump for him yet so it's either back in the tank or the royal flush. I've got a gorilla crab I'm trying to catch also. And either a pistol shrimp or a mantis. Is a pistol shrimp really reef safe? The **** emerald crab I bought to eat bubble alage at my acan coral and he was sposed to be reef safe.so Should I put the decorator crab back in or flush him ( and why do I feel bad about it when I eat crab legs all the time anyhow ?) ugg

Rekindling my old hobby

Reefing has been a long time hobby. Just getting back into it after being out of reefing for 20 years. Wow a lot has changed. Looking forward to getting help and hopefully sharing my knowledge also.

New stand and sump ideas

Hey Y'all!

I am thinking of rebuilding the stand for my 40 breeder. Right now it is on the bottom half of a hutch that we bought at a consignment place. Works well, fits a 20L sump well, and I just recently organized my power cords so it is all nice and neat.

However, it was not built for a fish tank. So although it holds the weight no problem, it could be stronger for my liking. And, I have a second spare 20L which could be used as a second sump, but there is not enough room in this tank. Also, I prefer a higher tank; not quite having the bottom at eye level, but something like 4 ft would be awesome.

Two thoughts:

First, if I make it that high (which I would do If I go through the trouble of making one), then it will need to be rather wide, as with 22-24 inches, it would rock fairly easily. This brings me to the next thought, which is the sump. I like the 20L, and I could likely do either two 20L stacked, OR, I could do another 40 breeder.

What are your thoughts? Anyone use a 40B as a sump? Any advantages over a 20L?

What are these?! (Not in the sticky hitchiker thread)

I have had my tank for about 5 months. Had a crash caused by the meanies at the store. Switched stores, now my tank is thriving. Bought live rock and a couple corals a few days ago, now these showed up! I can see appx 12 of them.

Little white dudes with 8 "arms" and a bubble on top.

Tang aquarium size

How big of a tank does a tang need? I’ve heard 125 to 55 gallon tanks but I just want to make sure. Thanks!

Cycling fish?

I am just starting out a reef tank and I’m wondering what fish I should put in the tank to start cycling it. Thanks!

7 legged starfish

I recently started a new tank so I got some live rock to start cycling the tank. Today I noticed a little 7 legged pink starfish in my tank and I’m wondering if it could potentially multiply or be dangerous for my corals. Thanks!

Use a thin sheet of glass on front pane of acrylic aquarium

Forgive this potentially dumb question, but from what I read, acrylic tanks can scratch quite easily. also from what I read its a pain to fix them on the inside of the aquarium and they are easily caused while cleaning algae.
So would it be possible to put a thin sheet of glass on the inside of the front panel to protect it from scratches?

Back in GB and picking up the hobby again.

Afternoon everyone. Great site you have here. Been reading all week.
Returned from the USA where I built a 12000g koi pond in Virginia. 20 years ago I had a marine tank but have forgotten the little I did know... So really a start over.
Just got a 120l sump system (I actually think small tanks may be harder to stabilize than larger tanks?) . Blue and white led lights.. Protein skimmer.. Sand and coral bed... Bio media in sump. Live Rock will go in once tank has cycled.. Followed by a white eyed eel. Hope to gradually build up from there.

Early Sunday

Morning all :D

Hit the pillow a lil earlier than the usual last nite, so of course I woke up before the dawgs chose to roust me. It is what it is,,,,

Coffee made, get those cups ready.

started up in the shop already,, plan, but don't expect to spend a good part of the day out here.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Still snow on the ground Sunday

Good morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY SUNDAY! Going to be a slow day I see rolling out of the racks...that's OK, it is Sunday. We'll be heading out to a big Ole farmhouse breakfast here shortly, so till then there's plenty of hot dark roast coffee. Busy day with Christmas shopping and related errands ahead, thus the thought of going out to breakfast. Hope all are doing well beyond well, and nearing super cool this morning, and all the best,

Help Identify My Corals

Hi,
I am new to owning a marine reef tank.
Over the past couple of months I have added some corals.
I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what I actually have in my tank. All I really know is that they are soft corals.
One of the pictures actually contains two corals on one piece of live rock.
Thank You for your help

Green algae

Okay so I’ve had my reef tank established for a little less than a year. Water parameters are all within normal ranges. I’ve kept up with weekly 25% water changes using RO water from my local fish store and coral pro salt mixture. I have tried using PURA Phoslock phosphate remover to remove any phosphates that won’t read on my kit. I have LED lighting which I let run on a 24/7 timer and I have even tried reducing the amount of light I give my tank and giving it dark time but that still did not work. I feel like I have tried everything to my knowledge to naturally get rid of the green algae in my tank, I have cleaned my tank vigorously and removed all traces of it from my tank but no matter what I do it comes back. Anyone have any tips on what I can do?

Marine Reboot

After being out of the hobby for a number of years, I am finally getting back into marine tanks. I am designing a 240 gal. wood tank. I will be asking lots of questions for sure, as the hobby has changed quite a bit since I was into it in the late 80's early 90's.

Crazy idea for lighting

I had a crazy idea to build a lighting system in a hood covering a 240g aquarium(72"lx24"dx31"h). I recently purchased new led headlights for my car that are rated at 6500K and 8000 lumens. I was thinking of putting 3 to 4 of these over the tank with a mylar reflector. any thoughts?

A snow covered Saturday

Good morning TRT Friends, and.....HAPPY SATURDAY! May be a Snowman in our future today, or at very least a couple frozen wet fools having fun. Another helping of nice hot Fried Mush to go with our Dunkin Donut's assortment and coffee this morning. Sorry, but even I can only eat just so many doughnuts. There's shopping in Jen and I's future today as well as play time....BUT shopping we must! Crowds should have died down by now.....RIGHT? Hope all have a safe, warm, and fun day ahead, and all the best,

Boogie blue plus for ro water

Currently I use well water for my aquarium. I would like to do ro if it was easier and affordable. I would like something that I could just connect to my faucet or to food grade water hose. I was wondering if anyone out there uses boogie blue plus for their aquariums and if so how well dose it work. Also if someone has something else that attaches to a hose or faucet I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thanks

15 Gallon Frag Tank Build

FINAL EXAMS ARE OVER!!!

Now i can resume my little frag tank build over the holidays!

The tank is a normal 15 gallon tank, with a false wall i built in for an area to store my live rock, heater, mini skimmer, ect.

One question is due to the limited volume of my in-tank sump id like to use something other than golf ball sized live rock rubble in order to maximize the amount i can use. I dont really want to go buy rubble rock, and spend time looking like a manic while smashing it, wrapped in a rag, in my drive way. What would be a good alternative to this? Crushed coral or can you buy bags of crushed live rock?

The idea is to put the rubble or substrate in a mesh bag in the in-tank sump, so i can pull it out and rinse it really well to prevent detritus build up. so it cant be super fine, maybe roughly the size of marbles?

Thanks, as always, for all of your contributions to both my questions and this forum as a whole.

How Times Have Changed

How times have changed.
I was just reading a Sharper Image Catalog and now they sell so many things that we didn't have when I was a kid. Did you ever look through one of those catalogs?
We used to play this game where you got a ball and you threw it at the other person to see if you could hit him. Now I see they got this thing where each of you get this stick looking thing and you can shoot real lightning bolts at each other.
They also have this little drone helocopter thing that you can fly right into your neighbors window and see what they are having for dinner. I would imagine the thing can also steal a drumstick right off their table. How much fun would that be! I am sure your neighbors would really like that.
Then you can walk around with this virtual reality thing on your head so you never have to visit the real world. You can have a virtual reality girlfriend, go to a virtual movie, drive a virtual car and I would imagine you could eat all your meals virtually. I amnot sure if it comes with a virtual doctor for when you starve to death. There is even a program where you can watch yourself watching a virtually reality show of yourself doing nothing.
There is virtual ping pong where you hit a ball of light. That seems really good for your muscle tone and overall fitness. I mean you probably have to change the batteries every so often and if you lift a lot of those AA batteries it can get exhausting.
Of course they have a few radios that you can listen to in your shower. Like, how long do you stand in the shower, are you really that filthy that you can't miss one version of Lady GaGa's Papparazi.
There is this Hover board thing that costs $300.00 and it goes 3 1/2mph. Isn't that walking speed? Why would anybody spend $300.00 to go as fast as you can walk? Maybe it's me!
I don't know how many nose hair clippers there are but apparently this is very important. Just last night I woke up from a dream where I was on a tropical Island sipping a Pina Colada with all 12 apostles, Leonardo DiVinci and 2 of the Radio City Rockettes and I realized I didn't clip my nose hairs. Today these things are so powerful that you can put it up your nose and it will clip your ear hairs at the same time. You can't make this stuff up.
Oh this is something I can't live without, right here on page 25. For just $100.00 you can order your own personalized bobble head doll, with your head on it. Wow, how great would that be. You stop at a light and your head nods up and down like you are some sort of an alien nerd weirdo. I can't wait to order that. I wonder if I can get one with hair on it.
This can save you some time, There is this Lady's hair drier that is so powerful that if you open your window while you are using it, it will melt up to 6" of snow on your sidewalk. I am not kidding.
Some of the things seem to stretch the truth just a little like this car vacuum that is so powerful you need to wear earplugs, not because of the noise, but because it may pull the wax right out of your ears and God Forbid if you are wearing earings, or worse, a nose ring.
I really can't see much value in this one. You hang this thing over your toilet bowl, and it lights up the water. I won't comment on that as I don't want to go there and if I saw that in someone's house, I would go to the bathroom in their neighbors house. Wierd.
But my absolute favorite if this refrigerator for a lonely bachelor who wants to feel he is married. Every time you pass it, it says,
"HEY LAZY, THROW OUT THE GARBAGE. TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES. DON'T DRINK OUT OF THE MILK CONTAINER. TAKE OUT THE DOG. FILL MY CAR WITH GAS. RUB MY FEET. GET ME A BEER".
These are all things you can buy now. We didn't have toys and stuff like this when I was a Kid. I remember asking my Dad once to get me a toy and he came out with a piece of wood, a couple of nails and a hammer. I played with that until I got married. Now I can get rid of that talking refrigerator.

Corals won't open??

I have something going on I have no idea why my corals are so pissed. I have an anemone that moved, trumpet coral ,mushrooms , and flower pot corals that are all retracted.. So weird bc not too much changed. All my levels are good but to low? Zero ammonia 0, nitrates 0, nitrites 0, phosphate 0. Ph 8.1 and temp 78 .

So for months corals have been great but I had marine velvet and was fallow for 80 days.. I got super excited bc this weekend I was able to add a small clown fish from my qt to my main 32 gallon biocube. Before I added my fish Friday I did a 7 gallon wc. During this time I pulled about a quarter of cheato out. I always clean my rear chambers minus the first one, this time I cleaned the 1st chamber too. On Saturday I added my clown who is doing fine. But each day my corals have been shrinking. Very weird I have not noticed my clown messing with any coral yet they are all retracted and my super small anemone has moved which is weird. Fyi i run charcoal and phosguard in an in tank media basket. I usually change this media once a month. I didn't change it last week because I changed it over a week ago during my weekly water change. And my calcium, alklinty , and magnesium where all in spec before the water change. I can post exact levels if needed. I buy my rodi saltwater from the lfs..

What am I missing? Something is wrong bc every coral is acting weird.. throw some idea out bc I am lost..

new old tank- LOTS of issues

Hello all
Erika here from South Fl. enjoying a weird blast of cold air.
funny thing happened
so I had a 12g nano biocube about 13 years ago when I lived with my parents. Kept 2 clownfish and a shrimp.
had to move and gave the tank to a family friend.
I get a call this week that said family friend is leaving the country and wants the fish to go to someone who will take care of it.

So I have been reunited with my tan and one of the original fish.

I gotta tell you when I saw the condition of the tank I almost cried.
I was meticulous in its maintenance and this is just shocking. I can't believe the fish is still alive.

SO I have a few questions
1- aside from hand pulling all this vegetation- any specific reef safe shrimp or crab or snail that you can reccomend with getting this under control?

2- the filter media was never changed or maintained- should I add some bio balls? some new live coral? what do you suggest?

3- when I had the tank I discovered a creepy spiky worm thing inside the main piece of live rock- well it turns out this things has multiplied like xenomorphs. They are everywhere in the sand and even in the plants.
What are they?
Is there any critter I can add that will eat them?
any suggestions besides hand picking??

4- this poor guy obviously needs a tank mate- his partner died about 2 years ago and he has been alone ever since. Would it be ok to get a cleaner shrimp this weekend and once the tank is under control get another oscellaris clown?

5- I will gladly take any suggestions on how to get this tank back in shape.

Pipefish in a reef tank?

I will shortly be setting up a 90G sumped tank - all equipment has arrived and I'm aiming for it to be a mixed reef with softies, LPS and SPS corals. Now we have all the equipment (just waiting for tank to be delivered as it's being custom built) we are thinking about stocking.

I've taken a liking to pipefish but wonder about their suitability for a reef tank and there seems to be a fairly divided view on this with anything from 'it's fine' to 'they should be in a species only tank'.

Has anybody kept these in a reef tank successfully (and long term)?

Fishload Question

Hello All - please see tank params below. I'm debating adding 1 more final fish (6 Line Wrasse) and would like to seek your advice. I'm not having any issues. I check, sometimes daily, PO4/NO3 and always get 0 readings via Hanna PO4 and Salifert NO3 kits. I feel that I feed heavy at 2x daily with morning 1/4 cube PE Mysis and then alternate evenings of NLS Pellets and a mixture of LRS Nano Frenzy/Reef Roids/Reef Chili mixture. Algae is almost nonexistent - just a light dusting of diatoms on the glass every 3-4 days. 2 weeks ago I added the chaeto reactor and the chaeto growth is going crazy - already removed chaeto 2x. What are your thoughts about adding the Six Line to complete the fishload?

Need help identify unknown creature

I found this after the light off in my aquarium. It came out of the live rock and was waving slowly. Sometimes, there is another one from the next hole but I only caught one on the camera. Any idea what it is? Thank you!
