So I've been working on getting some sort of sump installed in my system and late last week i finally got it up and running.
Its extremely crude but crude=cheap. Although my baffles didnt go to plan as the bottom of the box bows upwards when dry and flattens when wet. Basically gravity comes from the tanks rear sump (Fluval m60 tank) down to the ramp that just has some washed muslin cloth with some biomax pellets.
Also in the sump is a cheapo diy gfo reactor as I've been having extreme phosphate and algae issues fir months.
I know its pretty **** crude but the difference in water quality is like the difference between night and day. I used muslin cloth as i dont have any filter socks and i have about 65meters of it on a roll so when it gets dirty I just chuck it and put in some more after washing it in ro water first.
How often do people wash or change their filter socks. I've been changing it daily but they aren't getting as dirty as when i first installed the sump.
A couple of pics (wish i did a before and after of the display tank cos the difference is staggering!)
Although the filter cloth looks increda-dirty that was about 3 minutes after setting up the gfo but it was getting **** filthybefore that
In total this sump cost me £20/$30 for a return pump (as the one i had was toopowerful so now runs the reactor) and £20/$30 for some acrylic which was intended for baffles but not used
Everything else i happened to have lying around. Blue pvc tubing, the box that was full of old paperwork (just need to modify the lid so i can put it on and reduce evap) and the glass jar for the gfo was an old sugar jar with a plastic lid.
Come cleaning time i just turn the pumps off, lift the box out (its only got about 25 litres of water in it) and give it a good clean.
Opinions? Only thing i have concern about is the pink dye in the cloth. If things take a turn for the worse i will stop using the pink and buy a roll of white.
