Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster. I have maintained a freshwater tank, but am new to reefing. I acquired a 60g cube (24x24x24) setup from a friend. He was using a non controllable powerhead with a 1500 gph flow rate. The problem in my aquascape is that no matter how I aim it, it is digging holes in my sand. I have also been noticing dead spots at the side opposite the power head and in the middle of my rock formation.
I have been looking at upgrading to a controllable power head setup. I was originally thinking of going with a single Vortech MP40, but have been reading that it may not solve my dead spot issues. Many people recommend two MP10's, but I can't really swing the $500 with all of my other start up costs. That brought me to the new Tunze 6040 Nanostream with a 53-1190 gph flow rate. I am attracted to the compact design, which I could hide behind my rock work. I could get two of those for about the same cost of the MP40. (about $350) I could then link the controllers and get some cool waves and turbulent flow.
Any thoughts? Is it better to go with two smaller pumps over a single Vortech MP40? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
