Should i get a sump/refugium for my 20g?

I've been thinking about buying a sump so that i can put a protein skimmer and refugium in it. right now i have an aqueon back filter that i use but i'm not sure if it's very efficient. it'll cost me about $500 in all to buy everything and set it up with plumbing. let me know if it's really worth it thanks :)
