Reef Octopus HOB 2000 Skimmer

Any advise on how this protein skimmer should be operating. Pump is working fine and I removed sludge off the canister on the first day but there's a lot of water getting put right into the return cup pretty quickly. I've seen some where water is just barely re-entering the tank.
