I like the Radion by EcoTech Marine. It is a great light by itself and built very nicely.
But what I absolutely hate about it is the control.
First of all, you can not control the light without having an internet connection. The manual controls are a joke, they simply do not do anything meaningful, so the only way to control it is to connect to the light with the computer and have the computer talk to the cloud. This is pretty ridiculous if you think about it. Not only you have to pay $800 for the fixture, but also you have to pay your ISP for the fixture to be able to talk to the cloud. Is not this just plain silly ? I personally see no benefits in having my light talk to the cloud. And what happens if and when EcoTech runs out of business ? Then I will have this fixture which I will not be able to control at all.
Also, I wanted to tweak something with my light settings just now and I was not able to connect because EcoTech is doing some improvements to EcoSmart: http://ift.tt/2h9Lh6t . Very nice.
Also, you have to connect to the light via USB or wirelessly via another box, which they sell for $100. But, lights themselves do talk to each other wirelessly. So why do I have to spend extra $100 to make my computer talk to them wirelessly too ?
Plus, the interface, even when it is working is very buggy. Often it puts the lights into this mode when it does not react to anything until hard reset. When you have several tanks, often interface tells you you control lights over one tank, while in fact you control it over the other. It is very frustrating.
I hope EcoTech makes some improvements in their product development strategy soon.
