I'm a long time lurker on TRT, almost 5 years now, and have become intrigued with aquaponics. For those not familiar with aquaponics, it is the combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. The fish are used to produce the nutrients needed to grow the crops in the hydroponics operation. The plants then act as a natural filter for the water and is pumped back into the fish ponds or aquariums.
My question is could the techniques used in aquaponics be applied to the aquarium hobby as a filtration method? It would be alot like a refugium, but the difference would be that the water would be in a constant flow, thus eliminating the detritus build up. Plants like mangroves and shoreline purslane could be used in lieu of the crops. There would be no need for miracle mud or sand. The roots of the plants are allowed to simply grow into the water flow through the troughs.
I know I may be adding fuel to the fuge vs no fuge arguments :poke:, but I would like to hear some opinions on the viability of this as a filtration supplement. Im under no illusions that this would become the primary filtration method. I may be mad, but I'm not crazy. :silly:
