I have been working with marine species and reptiles for many years and am trying to expand my knowledge etc. Recently my problem had been my seastars. One of which is my serpent star and he seems to be disintegrating from his abdomin and with near perfect parameters, and no comminations with other tanks or bacteria, I cannot figure out what to do for the little guy! Any and all advice will be super appreciated! 😁❤️🐡

Hello! 20 gallon mixed reef
Hello! I’m Hannah. I’m new here hoping to talk to some equally reef obsessed people as myself. I am running a 20 gallon nano reef, heavily dominant in lps. But I also keep sps and softies too. I have attached pictures in this thread (hopefully). I have a big shipment of corals arriving Tuesday so I will update more pictures then. So for now here’s a few of my reef. Any questions just ask.
Ich
Hello everyone,
I recently transferred all of my fish over from a heavily over-stocked 150L to a 400L. The move went fine and all of he fish have been in there a week with no issues. I bought a Midas Blenny and added him at the same time as adding my other fish and everything seemed fine but white spots have started to appear on the Midas and they are becoming more and more visible. He was scratching on the rock a lot too but that’s sort of stopped. I did see one spot on my mimic filefish’s fin and my yellow tang has started to present himself to be cleaned by the cleaner shrimps.
Now I know the best way to treat ich is to tear the tank down and hospital tank etc but this method really isn’t possible for me. I appreciate this limits me massively but what else can I do to not necessarily eradicate the icy but contain it and sort of live with it? I have purchased a UV steriliser to add to the tank in a week and supports a larger volume than my tank volume. I know that won’t cure it but I’m hoping it will help. I have also (as of today) got an extensive test kit and finally got he ability to test oxygen, phosphates etc etc so I should be able to get my water quality quite good. I also as of today bought seachem garlic dip that you soak the food in before feeding so I’m hoping this will help also. All of the fish are eating and acting normal and the itching isn’t really happening with any other fish than the Blenny and he isn’t doing it too much.
Am I doing everything okay? Can I do anything else other than tear the entire tank down (as that simply isn’t a possibility)? Thankyou.

Water Changes
Hello, fellow reefers. I was doing testing my aquarium water and my tests came up good. I had undetectable nitrates and phosphates, and my cal and alk are both at normal levels. Normally I would do my weekly 5g water change tomorrow. Do I still have to perform a water change if my water chemistry is already normal? Also, I forgot to add, I have a 75g tank.

The next steps
Ok guys. This is going to be a long read but I'm going to ask a few questions so hopefully you can all help. Ive currently got a 120 litre tank all in one. Protein skimmer, filter and heater. Live rock and live sand.
1) ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates are at 10ppm and pH is at 8. I haven't gotten fish yet, going to wait a week to make sure readings are fine. The question is what test kit next????? As I know I need to start testing for phosphate, calcium etc.....
2) experiencing a bit of green algae across all the glass of my tank. Any suggestions on how to get rid????? I know water changes help so I've been doing a 20% water change weekly after scrubbing the glass. Anything else to help
3) my devils finger has kind of shriveled up. It did look all open and awesome but now just looks like a bald tree. I'm currently feeding every 3 days with reef snow from nt labs.
4) flow.......... What's right for the tank? I'm currently running 2 the jebao sw4 any one with these power heads/wave makers got any suggestions on where to put them and what settings?????
Sorry for the massive post just rather do it one lump than separate posts.
Thanks for all your guidance

Old Tank, New Setup
So here's the deal...
Had a 55gal FOWLR set up for over 10 years at the college I currently work at. I took it over about 4 months ago when it had only a pair of clowns. Due to electrical work being done, we had to tear it down and transfer clowns and some rock to a temporary tank. ~40lbs of live rock and gravel sat in ~3in stagnant water and fluval 406 canister filter (with 2 chambers of ceramic media, 2 sponge layers and a carbon media layer) sat full of water for ~2 months before we could get back into our building.
Got the tank back up and running ~6 weeks ago using same rock and adding 10lbs new live rock. Added a bag of live sand and cycled with the existing filter for 3 weeks. Have 2 powerheads to keep nice flow and encourage surface agitation. Got 12 mollies to cycle and got ammonia, pH and nitrites under control. Nitrates still off the charts. Added our clowns back in (their temporary tank had same nitrate levels) with the 5lbs live rock from the temporary tank and added a JBJ SK-45 protein skimmer. Replaced 1 of 2 carbon filter bags then added a new sponge filter layer 2 weeks later. Plan is to keep slowly replacing old filter media and keep up with biweekly 10% water changes.
No sump, no refugium, no wavemakers, no frills. Kept in a classroom really just for funsies so can't justify dumping tons of $$$ into it, just a little $ and lots of time/labor. Want to keep peaceful colorful fish as a nice display for students and maybe show some good algae growth, symbiotic relationships or any other biology textbook ideas that we could use to help teach in the classroom :D
Will take the surviving mollies back to the LFS and definitely thinking about some cleaner shrimp and a watchman goby/snapping shrimp pair. Probably first some blue reef chromis since they're pretty hardy and I'm still learning how to keep water parameters in check. Thinking about pj cards, firefish, zebra barred darts, royal grama and maybe down the line try sea stars and/or urchins. Looking for smaller fish with good color-angels, tangs, etc. are definitely out of the question! When I get some good algae growth I'll start adding a CUC-I know crabs are not everyone's favorite but thinking about a handful of small blue leg and scarlet reef hermits with some turbos and margaritas, an algae blenny and the above mentioned cleaner shrimp.
Would love to eventually try a bubbletip anemone for the clowns but maybe a few years down the line...
Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thank you in advance!
