Sand Siphon Question

I have a 70g FOWLR tank that has been up and running for about 11 months now, and fish for about 7 months. All my water parameters are good but I have a bad algae problem. I first thought it was the uglies, and it may very well be but I am trying to nail down exactly what it is and how to fix it. I have a GFO reactor on order but I have a quick substrate question.

I got the sand from a LFS. I'm not sure what kind of sand it is or if its crushed coral, but the grain is rather large. The sand always gets this black or green sludge like stuff that grows on its surface like a carpet. Here is a pic of my sand-

Every week I siphon out the stuff, but when I do siphon it and the other detritus, I always end up sucking up a good amount of the sand as well. I haven't minded removing this sand because I want to replace it anyway with a substrate that looks like sand (finer grain). My question is- Is it normal or considered the best practice to remove a little bit of sand every time you clean? I know you cant prevent some sand from being removed, but should you try and remove a certain amount of the substrate ? I have read that you should replace your sand once a year, so if I remove a little bit every cleaning, by the end of the year I wouldn't have much more to remove and replace.

Also once all the sand is removed, what is the best way to replace sand in a living tank? Live sand or dry sand?

Thanks Y'all

Vacation Contingency Planning

Hey Guys,

I'm heading out of town for the next week and am trying to figure out exactly what to do with my tank. I have a good friend/neighbor who is going to come in and feed but, given the recent storms we've had here in central IL, I'm a little concerned about prepping for a power outage.

Background:

I have a 29 gal FOWLR with a 10 gal sump about 6 months old.

I have a DIY PVC overflow that is a PITA (loud and temperamental with restarting the siphon). I've gotten so frustrated with the thing lately that I always drill from here on out. In the case of a power outage while I am gone, I give it a 50/50 chance of flooding when the return pump comes back on.

My current thought is to just disconnect the sump from the DT while I'm gone.

My aquaticlife 115 mini skimmer, filter sock, and heater are all in the sump. The skimmer is also so finicky that I haven't consistently collected any skinmate in a few months since I added the filter sock. I've been debating just ditching it since they aren't really necessary on a tank this size.

I keep my apartment at 78F, so the heater is turned off anyway.

Would disconnecting the sump from the display for the next week be an issue? All I would effectively losing is the mechanical filtration from the filter sock (which I won't be around to replace in a timely manner anyway). I could also add an extra powerhead to gain surface agitation since I will be losing aeration form the skimmer.

** I plan to switch some things up with the overflow sometime after I get back. Possibly just replacing the tank with a new, drilled one. You can expect another thread about that soon.

Coffee Time , Good morning Tuseday!

Good Morning Everyone!

Coffee is ready,

Short week, but still need to stay on pace as if it's a five day week.

Weather is hot and humid.

Have a Great Day!

New Live Rocks added - Voodoo!

Just found this on my prep for show.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Two jet fighters have splashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast. But it's not a crash. It's a tourist attraction. The obsolete F101 Voodoo fighters were deliberately sunk near Panama City Beach. The Cold War era aircraft are part of a growing artificial reef program. They'll attract fish and divers. The planes had been displayed on land, but had to be moved to make way for construction. Local dive shop owner Patrick Green dove to the site moments after the sinking. He says fish are there already. He adds the 76-foot depth is a "perfect, nonchallenging dive."

Do puffers bother corals?

Do puffers bother corals and anemones? My mom really likes them and so do I. My reef is mostly made up of softies and LPS with a few SPS. The fish I currently have are: 1 white cheek tang, 1 singapore angelfish, 1 male blue jaw trigger, 2 percula clowns, 1 sixline wrasse, and 1 yasha goby. My tank is 120 gallons. Thanks.

Is this working correctly?

Hi guys for the last month I have been wrestling with my protein skimmer and getting it to function correctly. For exactly 1 day I got it to work perfectly where it developed a nasty brown sludge before something happened and clear water flowed into it. I think I have come close, I do have a foam slowly flowing into the cup but I was curious if anyone can tell if this looks correct.
