Learn from my mistake- "stunner chalice"

So after a nice feeding last night, my "Stunner" chalice decided to go on a murderous rampage.

Stingers extended to about 7" away, killing whatever they touch. Meh. Maybe there is a reason its called the "Stunner" coral.

Frogspawn Coral

I'm thinking about getting a frogspawn frag a couple weeks down the road but I wanted to get some opinions first. I think the coral is really neat but I am concerned with the sweeper tenticles. I have a few other softies in my tank (45 gallon) and two fish at the moment. I've read that as long as you keep them fed you shouldn't really have a problem but I wanted to hear some of your stories and see if anyone has had an issue with them stinging other corals/livestock. Unfortunately a lot of the corals I think are nice also have sweeper tenticles but I guess I'll have to live without them if they would endanger other organisms in the tank.

Toadstool Coral looking rather limp.

I just got a Toadstool Coral 4 days ago. Yesterday afternoon I noticed it slumping over. The light was off at the time. So I just thought it was because of that, since, most the corals in our tank retract or shrink when the light is off. Just checked it this morning and it's still slumped over, but the polyps are out though. Is it sick? Is this normal? TIA

Anyone identify this?

This popped up over the past week, literally EVERYWHERE in my tank on the underside of rocks. Definitely filamentous - definitely not algae. I have no idea what this is - or if it is something to be concerned with or somehow controlled. Any insight is appreciated.

White tips on acropora

hey guys,
I have had this acropora in the tank for almost two weeks, the past couple of days the tips of one of the two acropora frags started to turn white. Today one of the tips on the other frag is a little white. What do u guys think?
The parameters are good.
Salinity 1.026
Temp 80

My 30 gallon Journey w/ pics!

Well after lurking for a few weeks I figured I'd start my own tank thread. So without further ado..


This is right after all equipment was purchased, and the tank was drilled. Ignore my bad habit on the top.

I originally had the skimmer set up way to high in the sump, like you see below, but as of last night I adjusted it.


I literally fought it for 4 and ad half hours last night, and when all said and done it ended with the skimmer doing this:


I literally gave up and went to bed. But as of this morning, it's actually skimming. I will adjust the flow etc daily and hopefully drop the water level in it some, but that's Coralife skimmers for you I suppose.

And finally a tank shot as of yesterday :


There is a damsel in there that my "lovely" ex wife snuck in because it needed a fish. She did so while I was at work and came over to feed my cat :mad: But it will be removed after the cycle.

I am getting alot of brown algae now, and as of yesterday before fighting the skimmer, the paramaters were Salinity 1.025, temp 78. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 2.0, Nitrate 40 ppm, and PH 8.2. Was weird not seeing any ammonia..

Coralife Biocube 29 lighting with corals

Hey, So I am new to salt water/coral tanks. I have a biocube 29 and am really eager to get some coral in the tank. My worry is the stock lighting. I am wondering if anyone could tell me how decent the biocube stock lighting is and what kind of coral I could put under it. I only have the standard lighting, yet I know their is room for 4 more LED strips if need be. Would love some assistance and knowledge for this department.
